What changed in Reddit account standing on September 10, 2026?

Reddit added a penalty you can't see from your own profile. The changelog dated September 10, 2026 says Reddit will "exclude posts and comments from accounts that have been prompted to verify they're human or register their automation but have not yet completed either step" from recommendations. Your comments stay up. Their distribution doesn't.

Recommendations are the placements where Reddit puts a post or comment in front of people who did not go looking for it. Reddit account standing is an informal term for how much of that distribution Reddit is still willing to give an account. One is a surface, the other is permission. Lose the permission and the surface closes without telling you.

Why is losing recommendations worse than a removal?

Because a removal tells you. Reddit says it will "clarify when a post or comment has been removed because it came from an automated account that violated our spam rules", so that path ends in a message you can read and argue with. Exclusion ends in nothing. You keep replying, your comment count looks normal, and the traffic isn't there.

One good answer in a niche thread does most of its work later, when somebody with the same problem lands on it. Cut that and you're left with the handful of people reading the thread that hour. What is the verify-or-register prompt asking for?

One of two things, depending on whether a person or a program is driving the account. The verify-or-register prompt is a notice Reddit shows an account asking it to either confirm a human is behind it or register the automation running it. Reddit has said it plans to verify that users are human without requiring disclosure of real-world identity, and CEO Steve Huffman put it plainly: "Any system we use will not expose your real-world identity to Reddit nor your Reddit username or activity to any third party."

The developer side is blunter. Reddit's note to developers reads: "Register your existing apps. Registration will help our team better understand usage and have the best way to contact you." Registered automation then carries a label on the account profile, described as a name tag for automation. There are two types, Developer Platform App and App, the second for registered automated accounts outside the platform.

Does the new Ask tab change what a good reply is worth?

Being invisible got more expensive. Reddit is adding an Ask tab to search results, next to All, Posts, Communities, Comments, Media, and Profiles, to "provide easy access to AI search results of your query so you can get a quick, summarized answer". For now it goes to a small subset of global users on all platforms. Product and category questions, the "best noise-canceling headphones" kind, also get a related products carousel at the bottom of results.

A summarized answer is assembled from content the system surfaces. An account excluded from recommendations is, by definition, surfaced less. We can't prove the two are wired together, and nobody honest will tell you they are.

What does this mean for tools that reply on your behalf?

Any tool posting with your login is automation you never registered. The penalty lands on your account, not the vendor's. Reddit will now name the spam removals that came from automated accounts, so the note sits on your comment while you explain it to a moderator.

How do you keep an account in good standing?

Finish whatever prompt you were shown, and never hand your login to software that posts. Everything else follows from those two.

• Complete the prompt your account received, human verification or automation registration, before you write another reply.
• Log in from your own browser and send the comment yourself.
• Let a tool draft into the site's own comment field if that saves time, then read it, cut whatever isn't true about your product, and hit reply.
• Skip threads where your product isn't the honest answer. A skip costs nothing.
• Check your profile for a label you didn't expect, including the App type used for registered automated accounts outside the platform.
• Read removal notices properly now that Reddit states when a removal came from an automated account that broke spam rules.
