ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit. Do your replies still count?
ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit on August 14, 2026, an 86.4% drop. It still read Reddit on 25 to 34% of pages consulted. Your replies still land where buyers ask.

In short
Promptwatch measured Reddit falling from 3.83% to 0.52% of ChatGPT Search citations between early and mid August 2026, an 86.4% drop. Trackerly found ChatGPT still consulted Reddit on 25% to 34% of pages during the same days. The link disappeared. The reading held, so useful replies in live buyer threads still do work.
ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit around August 14, 2026. Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86.4%. Its share of the pages ChatGPT actually consulted held steady. Viewfy's work in those threads did not change.
The link went away. The reading did not. If you've been answering buyers in public threads and you spent last week wondering whether the payoff evaporated, the measurements say something narrower and more useful than the headlines did.
What exactly happened to Reddit in ChatGPT?
Promptwatch measured reddit.com at a 3.83% average daily share of all ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7, 2026. Across August 14 to 17, that same average was 0.52%. A relative drop of 86.4%.
The fall came in two steps. On August 8 the share slid from the high 3s into the mid 2s. On August 14 it dropped below 1% and stayed there. Google's surfaces moved differently, with AI Overviews down 11.3% and AI Mode down 30.5% over 30 days, both gradual rather than a cliff.
| Measure | Before | After | Who measured it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit share of ChatGPT Search citations | 3.83% (Jul 18 to Aug 7) | 0.52% (Aug 14 to 17) | Promptwatch |
| site: operator in ChatGPT fanout queries | 0.37% | 16.8% | Promptwatch, Aug 8 |
| Searches per ChatGPT response | 1.08 | 1.83 | Promptwatch, Aug 8 |
| Reddit share of pages ChatGPT consulted | 23 to 24% | 25 to 34% | Trackerly |
| Reddit share of Google AI Overviews citations | 2.5% | 2.1% | Promptwatch |

Did ChatGPT actually stop reading Reddit?
No. Trackerly tracks sources consulted and citations displayed as two separate numbers, and found Reddit at 23 to 24% of the pages ChatGPT consulted in late June and early July, then between 25% and 34% on every single day of the collapse. The model kept opening threads. Only the visible credit went away.
That gap decides how you spend a morning. A helpful reply in a live thread is still text a model reads when it goes looking for an answer to a buying question, and still the thing a human reads when they land on that thread six months later.
Why did the site: operator change matter?
On August 8, Promptwatch measured ChatGPT's use of the site: operator rising from 0.37% to 16.8% of its fanout queries, roughly 46 times over. Average searches per response nearly doubled, from 1.08 to 1.83. ChatGPT started asking named websites directly instead of only sweeping the open web.
Named websites means help centers, docs and company blogs. If an engine walks up to your domain and asks it a question, owning a page that answers that exact question is the difference between getting read and getting skipped. That's the plain argument for writing while you build instead of saving it for after launch.
Does anyone actually know why the citations dropped?
No. Promptwatch was explicit that the data shows when the shift occurred, not why, and said a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, calling the size of the drop provisional. OpenAI did not respond to Search Engine Journal's request for comment. No Reddit statement has appeared. Six days sit unexplained between the August 8 fanout change and the August 14 cliff.
So hold the number loosely. Two independent trackers, one measurement window, no confirmed cause.
Should you stop replying in buyer threads?
No. A reply was never a citation play. A comment that answers the real question gets read by the person who asked, by everyone who lands on that thread from search later, and by whatever model consults the page. Citation share is one of those three, and it's the one you control least.
The test doesn't move either. If the draft stops being useful the moment you delete the product line, it was an ad wearing a comment costume. That's the whole standard in Reddit outreach for SaaS without looking like spam.
What should a founder change now?
Two things. Publish the answer on your own domain, because engines are asking domains directly. And stop treating one platform as the channel, since the question of where your buyers ask has a different answer per category and it keeps moving.
Viewfy scouts live threads on Reddit, LinkedIn, X, Threads and DEV, then writes the daily post in your voice against the questions those buyers type. The post is what the reply points at. Retrieval rules change without notice, which was also the lesson of the Reddit API restrictions and of Reddit's shift to AI moderation.
How do you check whether engines name you today?
Run the free /check at viewfy.ai. It answers whether AI engines can fetch your site at all, which is the yes or no that comes before any citation question. Then ask ChatGPT and Claude your real buying questions and read the names that come back.
Usually a competitor's. That gap is your brief for the next post and the next reply, and it's a better use of an afternoon than refreshing a citation chart you don't control. Start at viewfy.ai.
Frequently asked questions
- Did OpenAI confirm that ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit?
- No. Promptwatch published the measurement on August 20, 2026 and stated that the data shows when the shift happened, not why, adding that a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out. Search Engine Journal reported OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment, and no Reddit statement has appeared. Treat 86.4% as a tracked observation.
- If ChatGPT won't cite Reddit, is thread outreach dead?
- No. Trackerly found Reddit still made up 25% to 34% of the pages ChatGPT consulted on every day of the citation collapse, against 23 to 24% before it. The reply is read by the person who asked, by later searchers landing on that thread, and by the model. Only the printed link changed.
- What should I publish on my own site after this change?
- Answers to the questions your buyers actually type. ChatGPT's use of site:-scoped queries rose from 0.37% to 16.8% of fanout queries on August 8, 2026, so it now asks named domains directly. Viewfy writes the daily post in your voice against those buying questions, then carries it into the thread as proof.
