What did Reddit actually shut?

Reddit published Modernizing Reddit's Infrastructure on August 5, 2026. Reddit wrote the reason in one sentence. "In order to protect our platform, business, and users from abusive scraping and spamming." They said that with roughly $805M in quarterly revenue and about 500M weekly active users. CEO Steve Huffman, asked about old Reddit, said "We can limit access, migrate important uses, or rebuild it on a modern tech stack, and I think we'll probably do all of the above." An admin added "we can't promise it will be around forever."

Which back doors already return 403?

Unauthenticated .json endpoints have returned 403 Forbidden since May 30, 2026, and logged-out old Reddit has been blocked since the end of June 2026.

Reddit called old Reddit "a significant source of abusive scraping and automated traffic." Self-service API access already ended under the Responsible Builder Policy. Admin u/redtaboo said approval is now required for "any new OAuth tokens, any new API applications, any access to Reddit's public data API." New OAuth requests through /prefs/apps are gone. Approval requests are almost always denied.

Older OAuth credentials from before that policy still work. So does negotiated commercial access at a $12K/year minimum. Someone else's scraper also still works, until it does not. Scrapers are the path Reddit just said it is closing.

How do you tell a scraper from official access?

Ask whether the tool holds official Reddit OAuth. Anything else is a scraper or a key Reddit never blessed.
